Description

druids temple, a very impressive stone circle 2 miles out of masham in north yorkshire. the temple is known as the stone henge of yorkshire, but where stone henge is a true circle made between 3000bc and 2000 bc the druids temple is a folly. most sources say it was built in 1820's but on the guide from the tourist info it says 1700's. i did not want to beleave it was a folly but the evidance was their... one of the smaller stone stacks had fallen over and you could see the steel pegs that had been concreated into the stone to hold them in place... but still an amazing little place :)

Although it is a folly, it is a beautiful place to visit and some of the views over the local countryside are stunning. I camped there once....didn't know you weren't supposed to, but the landowner let us off as we were obviously respecting the site :D
There is the possibility that it was built for use......in the 18th and 19th centuries there was an upsurge in 'native traditions' including Druidry and Witchcraft, which led to the formation of the modern orders of Druids and Wicca.
With the right group of people it can be a magical place ;)
